Pharma companies’ obsession with cartoon characters that explain gross ailments

As marketing guy, I find it fascinating that the big pharma companies create friendly cartoon characters to explain health problems — everything from intestinal problems to toe nail fungus to insomnia. My favorites is the bladder that constantly pulls the lady into the bathroom before she takes the medicine, and then after, he holds hands and walks around town with her. I often wonder whether they use these to avoid having to go into gross detailed explanations, or if there is some deeper psychology behind it.
