Solar Power Is Sharply Increasing Around The World – But Where Is Sub-Saharan Africa?

The top 10 leading countries in solar power – shown here – are mostly in the developed world, with the exception of China and India. China leads the world with 43,500 Megawatts, followed closely by Germany at 39,700 MW.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), total installed solar power globally at the end of 2015 amounted to 227,100 Megawatts.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, South Africa is the only country to have surpassed the 200 Megawatts mark of solar power in 2015.

Still in South Africa, the largest solar plant in Africa, Middle East and the Southern hemisphere was launched in 2016 in the province of the Northern Cape. Enter the 175-megawatt facility that spreads over almost 500 hectares, which powers 75,000 homes.
