Last week our CEO David Henderson attended Facebook’s developer conference f8 in San Jose — Bay Area. This was a major tech event in a pretty crowded tech calender. DRVR was invited as guests of Facebook, Rainmaking and IMDA thanks to our participation in the first ever Startup Station in Singapore!
It was overall a very eventful week with 80 startups invited as guests of Facebook. Startups from all over the world were represented. DRVR met startups from the Amercia’s, Europe, Africa and Asia! We were proudly flying the flag for Myanmar and Thailand!
The first day involved a campus tour of the FB Menlo Park HQ. A large and sprawling facility split across dozens of buildings with 1000s of staff. It was wrapped it with a night of networking at one of San Jose’s more interesting pubs.
Day 2 kicked off with an amazing startup summit at Menlo Park. We had some inspiring stories of success and failure from different parts of the world. Sophie Eom from Adriel (Korea — Republic) told the inspiring story of how she overcame incredible odds to launch a successful startup with her French husband and exit in 7 months!
We had several sessions with ex Facebook staff dealing with issues such as fund raising, building teams and culture. What was amazing for all of outside of the valley was the speed and efficiency of the Valley VC. Deals were closed in days not months or years.
One thing which clearly set apart the valley from everywhere else was the common lack of investment capital. The one critical invention of Silicon valley has been the development of risk taking VC. This does not exist anywhere else. The US economic miracle is build on the three pillars of dispossession of the native peoples, exploitation of black and then immigrant labor all underpinned by cheap and readily available investment capital.
The actual conference itself kicked off on the Tuesday and we heavily attended. Mark Zuckerberg FB CEO opened the event with a rousing 40 minute presentation focused on the important pivot towards privacy. In a speech that should have despotic regimes the world over quaking in their boots he took aim at the dark forces that want to repress the voice of the people.
It wan’t all 10c words and inspiring speeches. Much of the following keynote presentations focuses on small incremental changes which were being rolled out across the key apps of IG, Whatsapp and Facebook itself.
Overall it was an amazing trip. Coupled with some awesome meetings on the side we achieved everything we had hoped to. Stay tuned from some news!
