Want to know how to fold dress shirts? In fact, there are a few ways to go about doing it. You might be surprised to learn a new thing or two once you’ve finished reading this.

That’s because we seem to fold it in some way that we assume is the right way. However, we might find out that we’ve done it the wrong way all along. If this is you, no need to worry.

We’ll be taking a look at three secrets to folding a dress shirt so you can use one for any given situation. You could be packing up for a trip somewhere or putting them in the dresser drawer (if that’s what you prefer). Either way, it’s always a good idea to find a preferred way to fold a shirt so you don’t wrinkle it or accidentally create some kind of imperfections to it.

Let’s get straight to it and unveil the first secret to folding a dress shirt.

Method #1: V-shape fold

  • Button up the shirt
  • Lay the shirt facedown on a flat surface
  • Be sure that the sleeves are spread out to the side
  • Take the sleeves and fold them inward (or a horizontal fold). It doesn’t matter which sleeve you start with, just make sure they are folded the same
  • Fold each side at least three inches towards the center of the shirt. If you see a “V” shape pattern, that means you did it corrected
  • From the bottom side up, fold the shirt in half. If you need to make a tighter fold, don’t be afraid to fold it again
  • Place in a suitcase or dresser drawer

Method #2: Roll it up

  • Button up the shirt and place it face down on a flat surface
  • Take the right-handed side of the shirt and fold it equally towards the left side
  • Take the sleeves and fold them towards the shirt
  • Roll up the shirt tightly
  • Place in a suitcase or drawer

Method #3: V-shape fold (2nd version)

  • Button up the shirt, place it face down and flat
  • Take the right sleeve and partially fold it towards the left side. The cuff of the right sleeve should be at the halfway point of the left sleeve
  • Fold back the right sleeve and take the cuff of it and create a small fold above the right sleeve
  • Fold the left-handed sleeve towards the right. Perform the same cuff fold on the left
  • Take the bottom half of the shirt and fold it in half. If you need to tighten up, fold it in half if and when necessary

Folding or rolling?

There has been debate about folding or rolling shirts. If you are someone who is a space saver, it’s important to consider rolling your shirts over folding. This will be the more preferred option if you are traveling with a small bag.

If you are folding your shirts, it would only be suitable for the dresser drawer as opposed to a suitcase. The reason for this is that you may risk wrinkling your shirt or causing a mess inside your travel bag.

Conclusion

There is more than one way to skin the cat when it comes to folding a dress shirt. However, in certain situations, one method will be more appropriate than another. Regardless, it’s important for you to consider choosing the best folding method that works best for you. If you are someone who is a space saver, rolling your shirts regardless is a great folding method. Your shirts will look good as new when you pull them out of your drawer or bag.
