I had a discussion with my 14 year old nephew, Wyatt, last night.

Serious question: What do you have against paper?

Like you, I’m a Rails developer, and for me, the vision of a paperless world is an absolute nightmare. My experience, which is now backed by empirical research, is that physical books are a far superior technology if you need to study and absorb a topic in depth. Not only that, but when I make a conscious effort to spend some of my time working out dev problems away from the computer, with only pen and paper, the quality of my work has significantly increased.

Therefore, while I’m all in favor of eliminating unnecessary paperwork, and ensuring that we produce paper in a sustainable manner, I think the vision of a world that is entirely paperless is misguided.
