The story ends with a one-sentence claim. No evidence, just a claim. That is enough to make it dubious. And the claim looks quite dubious.
What are we to compare the paperclip to? Dollars? But whereas we easily see a level where more paperclips are just a waste, we see no such limit on dollars. One paperclip is good to have, but 1000 are just in the way. $1 is good to have, but $1000 is a whole lot better, and we are trying to get way huger amounts.
A paperclip is just a tool. it has value according to how much it can satisfy a need. But a dollar is a tool that can satisfy any need, and more dollars satisfy more needs. We of course have some philosophers who we even honor, but then we go out and make even more dollars, way beyond the sum he claimed was going to fill all our needs, and we still want more, lots more. The sum is infinite.
There is just a big difference between paperclips and paper dollars.
