Photographers, content creators and artist, we all have long been mistreated in the economic equation of licensed work. In a world where photography is everywhere, we are getting laid off from newspapers like never before. Our photos are getting either devaluated, stolen, wrongfully licensed…

I am a freelance photographer now :-(

Photography licensers like GettyImages however are thriving. Their cuts are unbelievable. Nothing new to photographers…

Basically if you are not Steve McCurry, you won’t make a dime!

Being interested in both photography and technology I have been looking at some news lately. Can Blockchain technology and Smart Contracts save photographers? Can we get back to the glory days?

Blockchains, implemented correctly, can let us photographers track and licence our work without the need of a third party. Easy as that! Much like how Bitcoin can eliminate the need of banks.

Is anybody working on this?

Oh yes! Very much indeed!

YouPic, KodakOne, CreativeChain, CopyTrack are amongst the most prominent projects working a Blockchain solution for photographers.

Comparing the different projects, YouPic really seems to be the team that probably will succeed with this quest. The reason for this is that none of the other projects actually have a community of photographers in order to put the Blockchain in use for a huge crowd of creators and consumers. Simple as that!

I really hope that photography will get back to it’s glory days using this new technology. Hopefully to call oneself a photographer, will mean something once again!
