The difference lies in the psychology — all well-run non-profits care about the strength of the relationship they have with their supporters. Money is useful, but especially for an org like the ACLU, having committed supporters is key. And frequent interactions (especially interactions that strengthen the supporters’ feelings towards the ACLU (and generate money) are more effective than single transactions.
