Memes Suck

Executive Summary:

The essay delves into the pervasive influence of hate-memes in the Israel-Palestine conflict, highlighting their role in shaping divisive narratives. It emphasizes the detrimental impact of memes in propagating biased perspectives, dehumanizing opponents, spreading misinformation, oversimplifying complex issues, fostering echo chambers, inciting emotions, and undermining resolution efforts. The exploration transcends the superficial allure of memes, urging a counterbalance through critical awareness, research, the essay format, the Socratic method, and an acknowledgment of the darker aspects of human nature. The overarching goal is to foster a collective understanding grounded in unity, forgiveness, and peace, emphasizing that memes sustain conflict by entrenching individuals in singular viewpoints, hindering rationality, and impeding conflict resolution efforts.

Let us begin.

In the realm of digital discourse, memes emerge as ephemeral emissaries of persuasion, laden with the weight of propaganda that seems to devour collective thought, akin to an invisible black hole sucking the life and brains out of humanity.

As we consider the Israeli-Hamas-now-Palestinian-now-Muslim conflict, these visual shards of the whole become a thousand destructive cuts, reflecting what are vast and intricate nuances of geopolitical and human realities into microscopic myopias.

As Margaret Atwood so clearly distills, “War is what happens when language fails.”

And in the technocratic algorithms forced upon us it follows that when language fails, and war ensues, meme propaganda thrives.

A memes reductionist approach, reminiscent of a drunken stream-of-consciousness narrative, beckons the thinking person to ascend beyond divisive narratives and climb into the profundity of human beings. However, as the conflict in the Middles East swells, the power dynamics between Hamas and Israel (not to mention the greater influences of U.S.A. capital and war machine influences as well as UN and other world leaders demand to cease-fire) morph into stark binaries within the realm of memes. The brevity of these visual missives conceals eons of historical grievances and political complexities, giving rise to a dehumanizing atmosphere that reduces entire genetic, ethnic, religious, social cohesions into bacteria-like experiments in a colossally FUBAR, geopolitical Nakba petri-dish.

Meme-driven propaganda manifests as a formidable entity, shaped perilously by human hands that intertwine words of hate with images of justification. It assumes an unassuming form yet resembles hate art as potent as a statue of a sword-yielding bearded figure on horseback, reminiscent of a bygone era’s Southern town square. Robert E. Lee comes to mind. However, its innocuous style on the “thumb-up” platforms is more like a digital Trojan Horse galloping millions of neural pathways at once.

Doesn’t this quote from Neil Postman in Amusing Ourseves to Death seem appropriate?

“When a population becomes distracted by trivia, when cultural life is redefined as a perpetual round of entertainments, when serious public conversation becomes a form of baby-talk, when, in short, a people become an audience, and their public business a vaudeville act, then a nation finds itself at risk; culture-death is a clear possibility.”

So, what is the perpetuation of the making and proliferation of hate-memes used for?

1. Propagation of Biased Narratives: Memes can be crafted to propagate biased or one-sided narratives that favor a particular perspective in a conflict. By distilling complex issues into easily shareable and digestible content, memes become potent vehicles for spreading and reinforcing specific viewpoints, contributing to the polarization of opinions.

2. Dehumanization and Otherization: Memes can be used to dehumanize and otherize opposing groups or individuals involved in a conflict. Through caricatures, stereotypes, or derogatory imagery, memes foster an environment where empathy and understanding are eroded, heightening animosity between conflicting parties.

3. Misinformation and Propaganda: Memes can carry misinformation and propaganda, amplifying false or misleading narratives to manipulate public opinion. In a conflict, memes can be strategically designed to distort facts, manipulate emotions, and sway individuals toward a particular stance, thereby perpetuating misunderstandings and reinforcing divisive sentiments.

4. Simplification of Complex Issues: Memes, with their succinct and often oversimplified nature, can contribute to reducing complex issues into binary, black-and-white representations. By oversimplifying the root causes of a conflict, memes hinder nuanced discussions and impede efforts to address the underlying complexities that fuel the dispute.

5. Creation of Echo Chambers: Memes are shared within online communities that align with particular perspectives. This creates echo chambers where individuals are predominantly exposed to content that reinforces their beliefs. In a conflict, these echo chambers contribute to the entrenchment of positions and inhibit open dialogue or consideration of alternative viewpoints.

6. Inflammatory and Provocative Content: Memes can be designed to be deliberately inflammatory or provocative, eliciting emotional reactions that further escalate tensions. Such content contributes to a hostile online environment, challenging constructive dialogue and promoting a cycle of reactive and emotional responses.

7. Undermining Resolution Efforts: Memes can undermine efforts toward conflict resolution by perpetuating distrust, skepticism, or cynicism. When used strategically, memes can create an atmosphere where any attempt at dialogue or compromise is met with resistance, hindering the prospects of finding common ground.

When strategically employed, making and proliferating memes can serve as a potent tool to perpetuate and escalate conflicts. By manipulating narratives, dehumanizing opponents, spreading misinformation, and fostering polarization, memes maintain divisive dynamics that hinder efforts toward resolution and reconciliation.

Edward Bernays, in Propaganda writes. “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country.”

What is in a person that can create and spread such hate art?

And so, my inquiry arises: How do we break free from the ensnarement of such hate art?

Sadly, humanly, commonly, in my introspection, I notice a fleeting joy, a schadenfreude that initially feeds a hunger for power to fight this feeling of helplessness. Yet, akin to a transient sugar high, its sustenance proves neither enduring nor nourishing to the soul. Instead, it fosters an insatiable craving, a desperate attempt to mask the despair and helplessness of witnessing continuing needless human suffering.

What can I do to counteract the meme propaganda?

There are many things I attempt and many more to learn to remain vigilant in the face of incessant attempts at mind-control.

1. Notice the Stench

Confronted with this dilemma, binary narratives are blowing in the wind, like a cooling fan on a scorching day — until, as if an excremental meme was flung into the fan blowing in my direction, they fuel division, obscuring shared values and cultural nuances that define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In other words, something about it stinks, and it’s on ME!

My response, shaped by the pain-laden crucible of neuroscience studies, propels me to perform some bias testing and basic hypothesis testing (rigorously challenge your assumptions), a counterbalance to the sugar-like rush of hate-fueled narratives. Take the meme as an idea and purposefully test the truth and falsehoods of it from different perspectives, especially the one opposite of yours!

2. Write in the Essay Format

Lately, the allure of the essay format captivates me — a vessel for contemplation that transcends the limitations of meme-induced, thoughtless polarization. It implores me to reflect on universal aspirations for reconciliation and harmony amidst the tumultuous sea of conflicting narratives. This is such an essay, brought on by meme propaganda overwhelming social media platforms on what is happening (and being fictionalized) in Israel. Writing serves as a way to wire my brain to filter out and guard against fiction and other nonsense.

3. The Socratic Method

Embracing the Socratic method, I pose questions challenging oversimplified perspectives perpetuated by memes. Endeavoring to think independently, I strive for a sense of self-reliance that reverberates through my being. The call to stay awake, resist the hypnotic allure of meme culture, and break free from the shackles of binary thinking, recency bias, and other cognitive constraints echoes within.

This meme does a few nasty tricks.

Firstly, the act of reading, it forces you to “imagine” something scary. Secondly, you get a feeling from a fiction that (most likely) isn’t actually happening to you for you to sympathize with a certain group. Then, shows the perpetrator as a dark character, making you afraid of “the Other” group. Simply put, “They” are the dehumanized boogeymen in dark tunnels, ready to come up and get you.

4. Observe Ones Own Shadow

In acknowledging the dark currents within human nature — a propensity to feed on hate, to otherize, to dehumanize, and to assume the fascist role of control — I confront my own shadow in a way most are willing to evade until their final moments. Alas, the understanding of their own essence may arrive too late. Yes, I want to indulge in dehumanizing those not like me. I want to feel better and more powerful than “them.” I want to control them to alleviate my real and imagined fears. I want my fear gone and as long as I don’t have to strangle anyone with my own two hands, I am happy to let others do the ‘job’ for me. Grotesque.

Acknowledging ones own dark shadow that likes to creep around like Gollum (a bit of a sensory homunculus) is an endeavor to transcend the superficiality of meme propaganda and foster a collective understanding resonant with the themes of unity, forgiveness, and peace. Hate-memes, it becomes evident, sustain conflict, entrenching us in a singular point of view, rendering reason, good judgment, and the capacity to see beyond emotional reactions seemingly impossible.

5. Observe the Obstacles to Conflict Resolution:

In the world of conflict resolution, a common and intricate challenge arises when individuals or parties involved employ a variety of tactics to evade the actual resolution process. This evasion often manifests through using reasons, justifications, and excuses, typically rooted in the past, or by fixating on an uncertain future. These maneuvers serve a dual purpose: either rationalizing the perpetuation of the conflict or providing a means to retain control over the narrative and outcomes.

One prevalent strategy is the retrospective approach, where individuals dwell on historical grievances, real or perceived, to justify their reluctance to engage in resolution efforts. Past grievances are wielded as shields, protecting entrenched positions and providing a semblance of legitimacy to their stance. This retrospective justification allows individuals to cling to grievances, portraying themselves as victims and deflecting attention from the core issues at hand.

Conversely, an equally potent evasion tactic involves projecting into an imagined future, marked by uncertainties and fears. By fixating on potential negative outcomes or hypothetical scenarios, parties in conflict may use the uncertainty of the future as a rationale for maintaining the status quo. This avoidance strategy serves as a psychological barrier, fostering hesitation and fear of the unknown and preventing sincere engagement in resolution processes.

This meme does just that, conjuring up a reincarnation of Naziism, the biggest fear of Israel and Jews worldwide. How? It puts into the mind of the reader already on guard against such tyranny from past events and puts it squarely into a predetermined future in their mind.

Moreover, this oft unconscious process often intertwines with the desire for control. Those reluctant to relinquish control over the narrative or the outcome of the conflict may strategically deploy these mechanisms to maintain a semblance of authority. By clinging to the past or fixating on an uncertain future, individuals or groups may create a narrative that aligns with their agenda, ensuring a continued sense of control over the trajectory of the conflict.

In essence, the evasion of conflict resolution through historical grievances and future anxieties is a complex interplay of psychological mechanisms. It involves consciously using reasons, justifications, and the subconscious desire for control over the narrative and outcomes. To address such evasion effectively, conflict resolution processes must focus on surface-level issues and delve into the underlying psychological dynamics that perpetuate the avoidance of resolution. This may involve fostering an environment of trust, promoting open communication, and encouraging a shared commitment to genuinely confront and address the core issues at the heart of the conflict.

Finally! Breaking the Chains of Hate-Meme Propaganda

In deactivating the bomb of hate-memeification within the Israel-Palestine conflict, we confront a stark reality — a world ensnared in the divisive clutches of distorted narratives and dehumanizing visuals. If you have taken the time and explored and exposed the insidious ways in which memes perpetuate biases, hinder understanding, and obstruct the path to resolution with me, thank you.

As we looked into the motivations behind the creation and proliferation of hate-memes, a tower of tactics tumbles — propagation of biased narratives, dehumanization, misinformation, oversimplification, echo chamber creation, provocation, and undermining resolution efforts. Hate-memes, meticulously manufactured, become instruments of conflict escalation, fostering a landscape where reason and empathy struggle to take root.

Yet, amid this dingy city of digital dilapidation, a call to action echoes through the essay. It urges a collective awakening, realizing that the fleeting joy derived from hate-memes is a hollow sustenance incapable of nourishing the soul. The strategies to counterbalance meme-propaganda emerge — observing the stench, embracing the essay format, deploying the Socratic method, acknowledging the shadow within, and keenly observing the obstacles to conflict resolution, merely remain a guard against the hate meme jab beneath your skin.

In essence, this endeavor is a plea to transcend the allure of hate-meme propaganda. We can strive for a collective understanding grounded in unity, forgiveness, and peace.

Memes, as exposed, are the shackles that bind us to singular viewpoints, rendering reconciliation impossible. The path forward, lit by critical awareness and self-reflection, invites us to break free from these chains, fostering an environment where genuine dialogue and resolution can flourish.

We can make hate, or, there can be love. Choose.

As the digital domain continues to devolve us, carry the torch in the direction of enlightenment, challenging echo-algorithms feeding hate-meme doom-scrolling.

Instead, flip the script, meme, by meme, from hate to love, telling the algos you want reconciliation, you want love, empathy, Understanding, peace and a harmonious future.
