A stack of Newspapers on a shelf

You will agree with me that the Media aggregates and communicates valuable information from the government and the private sector to a diverse target audience and vice versa. But one of the most significant products of the Media is News.

Some people believe that every piece of information collated from the North + East + West + South is what the media calls NEWS. Yet, scholars describe it as a newly received or noteworthy piece of information that has been processed and disseminated through mass media. This is primarily the duty of the media; to aggregate, process, and disseminate information (News).

It is, therefore, no surprise that there is a day dedicated to commemorating the efforts of the media and drawing public attention to the role of the media in providing trustworthy information that serves the public good. This is why News is best trusted when it is served by the media.

World News Day is a global campaign that has witnessed an increasing number of newsrooms across the globe participate to amplify the power and impact of fact-based News. This is evidenced in the drive to curb fake stories, which is on the rise due to unethical practices by individuals who do not have media training and the requisite knowledge.

The increase in fake news is detrimental to the reputations of individuals as well as organizations. At the Centre for Communication and Social Impact (CCSI), this informed the strategic disposition to monitor and analyze, and track media mentions related to the different interventions we support. This is a valuable service that we offer both corporate and individual high-level clients.

CCSI has a dedicated desk for daily and weekly monitoring of media content as well as content analysis according to the thematic interests of clients, and for internal decision-making.

In essence, media monitoring has proven to be a vital process in crisis communications and risk management. The result has helped to track mentions of our clients and their brands in the media with necessary recommendations from the CCSI team, especially where Social Behavior Change (SBC) is required.

As the world commemorates World News Day on September 28, CCSI is grateful to every media organisation which has partnered and supported our work

We encourage media practitioners and communications stakeholders like CCSI to promote fact-based information.

Happy World News Day!
