Work Repetitions: How They Are Dealt With

Eighty-one year old fashion designer, Giorgio Armani, said, “A balance between work and life is the key to happiness. I sacrificed my life for my work and if I had a chance I would do the opposite.” (Link: This quote relates to life’s habit of work repetition. Although work repetition continues to increase in satisfaction and pay rate, employers who work overtime also have dissatisfaction in work areas that are attempted to be dealt with.

Is getting paid the only satisfactory subject when dealing with work repetition? Of course not. There are many more other matters of work repetition that create great satisfaction. One matter would be that repetition gives team members or co-workers a better understanding of what needs to be done. This means that an employer’s boss would give a person an instructional task that can repeatedly be put into action. For example, if a person working at famous restaurant Jamba Juice was given the training to use a juicer, that person would keep the instructions in mind for any type of smoothie made for a customer, or for the employee’s self satisfaction themselves. In addition, repetition defines work procedures that can prevent or minimize certain mistakes. In this case, the more a worker continues to do a certain task, the less chance there would be for the person to be ignored or fired. For example, the more Michael Jackson sung and danced, the more famous his singing and dance styles became before his death. Furthermore, repetition allows for more effective and faster task completion. In other words, the faster a task becomes, the more tasks a person gets. The more the tasks, the more payment an worker would achieve.

Once a homeless man and now a sixty-two year old stockbroker, Chris Gardner, once said, “I started thinking about Thomas Jefferson and the Declaration of Independence and the part about our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And I remember thinking, how did he know to put the pursuit part in there? That maybe happiness is something that we can only pursue and maybe we can actually never have it.” This quote brings me to the point showing that where there is good there is also bad. So what is bad about continuous work? First, repetitive tasks can lead to staff boredom and burnout. For example, in the classical episode, “Squidville”, of Nickelodeon’s Spongebob Squarepants, Spongebob’s neighbor Squidward Tentacles finally moves himself to a gated community where he finds his own type of enjoyment with other octopus type sea creatures, one of those enjoyments being playing his clarinet. However one day Squidward gets bored of doing the only same tasks that he enjoyed every day without doing anything else, which starts when he tried to play his clarinet once again. Squidward later started becoming like the old neighbors, Spongebob and Patrick, that he hated by playing around with a reef blower. In addition, repetitive motions can lead to bodily harm such as carpal tunnel syndrome. One famous example of an employee who achieved carpal tunnel and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis would be Stephen Hawking. It was because of his overdose in working that caused him to be in a wheelchair and use technology to speak.

Now that we know the goodness and immorality of work repetition, what would be the best practices (do’s and don’ts) of dealing with work repetition? An intentional way of dealing with work repetition is to take frequent breaks. So how do we deal with breaks? First, people would need to create timing. An ideal timing for taking breaks would be at least every hour. One would need to stand up, stretch, and walk around. Humans are not meant to be in front of a screen all day, in a chair, or without food all day. People are meant to be healthy. In addition, people should use computer software that remind or enforces their breaks and exercises. By having an alarm set within a work time, any person can create a healthy lifestyle instead of a stressful one. Most break alarms can be set within the computer software people call cell phones. For those who work with laptops and in house computers, break alarms can also be set using the applications, websites, and other computer programs. However, as noted earlier, breaks should be at least only within an hour. According to a table within Cheryl Conner’s article, “Who Wastes The Most Time At Work”, “Sixty four percent of employees visit non-related websites each day. In this category, the amount of time wasted per week on non-work related websites is as follows: 39% of employees waste 1 hour, 29% of employees waste 1–2 hours, 21% of employees waste 2–5 hours, 8% of employees waste 6–10 hours, and 3% of employees waste 10+ hours. Contributing to these percentages are social media networks. When I say people I mean for those who must work as groups to get paid.

In conclusion, work repetition is not so good, and not so bad either as long as an employee continues to use and discover new ways to deal with the matters at hand. There will always be times to build up times for breaks and times for working. Nobody is required to force themselves to work. Ones’ boss cannot tell a person to do something that would make a person unhealthy or unhappy. Even if a person is not an employee and studying a subject or subjects to achieve their dream job, a person cannot be forced to study something else because a family has many problems, especially in terms of money. As Chris Gardner said to his son, “Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you gotta protect it. When people can’t do something themselves, they’re gonna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.” My dream was, and still is, to become an employee within animation companies. Such companies would include either Funimation, Aniplex, etc. People should continue to repeat their work and study habits to express their own dreams in their own satisfactory way, and except or get rid of the difficulties held within the path to those dreams.
