I don’t miss any of these bums. To me, there should be three trial options: death, a few years in jail, and/or house arrest with an ankle bracelet. The current system of 3 million people in jail and 7 million people being monitored is absurd, and expensive. We don’t need minor criminals (say someone who steals a $25,000 car) in long-time jail at $50,000/year. When the punishment becomes more expensive than the crime, we taxpayers are better off with the crime than with the billion-dollar prison industry. My experience: Once in my life I lost a very nice music system (say $1,000 in today’s dollars), but that is cheap to my taxes paid.
