The next chapter

I can’t believe that it is already November. The last few months have been both exciting and intense.

Building something new consumes you: I have been drawing on napkins at restaurants, I have used ketchup bottles and salt shakers to explain concepts, I think of edge cases in a spin studio, and I have found myself waking up in the middle of the night to doodle an idea on the whiteboard. Yes, I installed a whiteboard in my home. What a game changer.

“So what’s next?” That’s been the common refrain from both friends and acquaintances. For the first few months after leaving Gusto, the honest answer was “I don’t know.”

I spent a few months exploring different industries, problem spaces, and talking to a lot of people. I also did a lot of reflection and introspection. And now, I have a better answer…

Say hello to Sonix

Sonix automatically transcribes audio and video. We do it in less time than the length of the recording at a fraction of the traditional cost. Sonix also timestamps every word so it’s easy to search for key moments.

Silicon Valley jargon version: “We use artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) to transcribe audio and video files so that they are easy to summarize, search, and share.”

We want to help storytellers tell stories. We want to help podcasters create podcasts. We want to help interviewers review interviews. We want to help people share ideas.

There is a lot more information on our freshly redesigned Sonix website. By the way, if you know anyone who has high quality audio/video files that they need to transcribe, I’d appreciate it if you send them our way.

Am I excited?

Hell yes, I am!

A few themes have resonated with me throughout my career—Sonix embodies them wholeheartedly:

Integrity above all else. Build something in a way that you are truly proud of. C.S. Lewis said it best: “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”

Work with amazing people. This team rocks. Jamie is a seasoned executive who led Xero’s expansion into the US. Stephen was Employee #2 at Gusto and we’ve worked together for over 4 years building a payroll, benefits, and HR system with complex flows and processes. And then there’s me.

The way that the world is today isn’t the way the world needs to be tomorrow. Have you ever spoken to a transcriptionist? Or a producer who has to transcribe an interview? It’s a tough job; technology has gotten to the point where it can dramatically help.

Experiences matter. Every customer interaction should be well designed. We fundamentally believe that we can always do better.

Start small. Big things started as small ideas and then they grow.

Stories add color to our lives. Technology should be more human; technology should enhance our lives.

I’m excited about the opportunity to create magic once again.

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” — Walt Disney

Jamie, Stephen and I are writing the next chapter together.

Wish us luck.
