This sentiment is a bit of a cop-out, in my opinion. If I had a dollar for every time that someone skirted the actual work of critically analyzing something by saying “the actual text matters less than whatever garbage external assumptions and contextual/personal shit I put on it” I would be richer than all these rappers combined. The fact that Young Thug doesn’t really say anything (he literally doesn’t say words sometimes) matters insofar as it belies an important point about our generation’s priorities in music and our understanding of it.
