The American memory suffers from failing to remember the truth about itself but instead relies on a Hollywood version of what it wishes it had been. The importance of photography is that it breaks through the loss of memory by revealing in segments lasting not much more than 1/60th of a second, a mere slice of time, to reveal to ourselves what we really were. The FSA project will always stand as the true reality of the that time of shame and mass migration.
