The truth is that Hillary Clinton was actually correct when she referred to half the Trump supporters as being a “basket of deplorables”. Although that was a politically toxic thing to say — nonetheless, it was true. It was toxic because there is nothing that invigorates a deplorable group of people more than picking a fight with them. They actually EMBRACED the moniker of being “deplorable”. Hell, they made t-shirts hailing their “deplorability”. Not all Trump supporters were misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic racists; however, if you happened to be a misogynistic, xenophobic, homophobic racist — there is a better than 99% chance you voted for Trump. An inarticulate, irrational personal like Trump resonated with a large group of inarticulate, irrational people because he SOUNDED like them. “That’s the way WE talk! That’s the way my friends talk at the bowling alley on Saturday nights!” They could relate to him for all the wrong reasons. This world is full of narcissistic idiots like Trump. That’s not particularly surprising. What we learned in the 2016 presidential election is not so much that such people exist — rather, that this nation’s IQ has dropped to such a exten that people are stupid enough to actually embrace this in a president. Basically, it was a revolt of irrational, angry, stupid people who just wanted to throw a rock through the window of those whom they feel look down on them - “Do you hear me NOW?!” Trump was their rock. It’s too soon after the election to expect them to step forward and say, “Boy, did we really screw up.” People do not admit their mistakes that quickly.
