Anime Angel Beats!(2010) tells the story of a group of teens in a “suspended” state before they enter the afterlife. This post’s title is a question that should be answered in the affirmative: Yes, Angel Beats! is an excellent show worth your attention.

Angel Beats! isn’t really a romance anime, despite appearing to be during some episodes. There are elements of sci-fi, slice-of-life, comedy, and action woven into the plot of this anime. Now that I think about it, I can’t really categorize Angel Beats! anywhere since it touches on so many topics.

Despite its 13 episodes, the series manages to accomplish a lot. Angel Beats! has good episodes and bad episodes, but nothing seems too out of place. It’s the emotional aspect of the main characters that make the series come alive.

About What Does It Talk About?

There’s a group of teenagers who resist the idea of “passing on” to another life in this series. The show has already ended, so spoilers are ahead. There is an overlap between sci-fi and slice-of-life in this situation.

Yuzuharu Otonashi, a teenage boy who arrives in the afterlife (in the form of a school), has no recollection of his life before he died. In an attempt to rebel against God’s will to pass on, he teams up with a group called The Afterlife Battlefront.

They are forced to confront the things they could not face in real life as the series progresses, and they discover why they are in this afterlife.

The show’s “goals” aren’t established until later in the script, giving Angel Beats! a unique storytelling voice. As viewers draw parallels between themselves and the characters in Angel Beats!, they may reflect on their own lives.

It is a fictional story, but the emotions are fleshed out to make it feel real because the characters’ stories can be true. There are many questions people might have about those who pass away too soon. Angel Beats! aims to answer those questions. Is it possible to imagine what their feelings would be if they were taken from us too soon? Assuming they had a traumatic life on earth, what would their afterlife actions be like?

It handles the subject of death in a very productive manner, despite being a gloomy subject. It did a lot of character-building in 13 episodes while answering all of the questions posed early on.

Verdict

The 13 episodes of Angel Beats! should be watched in one sitting since they are quite long. Due to the linear plot, it might be easier for those who have forgotten the previous episodes to follow along. Each episode carries over emotions from the previous one.

The anime series Angel Beats! deal with a unique topic that is handled with action and humor. There’s humor in this show, as well as some tears. It provides a breath of fresh air to avid slice-of-life viewers in a world where anime titles and genres are beginning to blend due to their similarities.

In fact, Angel Beats! is probably one of the more notable slice-of-life anime. It has been a mainstay in the anime community for years, and after watching it, I can agree that it’s pretty dang good.

Angel Beats! is not a perfect anime by any means, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t great. This show is one that anime fans should watch.
