To be fair, it’s not clear inside the industry what “game designer” or “producer” means. Those are the two positions which probably vary the most from company to company. Did you know Electronic Arts didn’t even have a track for “game designer” prior to acquiring BioWare? Everything we considered design was done by producers…which certainly seemed weird to us, but that was just the way it worked there. But, yes, you are correct: as inexact as the industry is about those positions, knowledge of it outside the industry is likely worse.
