People looking at their hand

I may have talked about this, but I am not sure and do not go back to what I did here, but this is a new event that took place today.

My new work is in Retail/Entertainment. Let’s leave it at that. If I told the real thing, I would be showing my “Hand.”

As I go around the Shopping Mall, I see many people looking at their hand. Notice I did not say “Hands,” as there is only 1 hand.

Does anyone know what I am talking about before I give it away?

Smart Phones. One day, there is going to be a law against walking and using a smart phone for web stuff while you are walking in public places. To this day, I do not have one. And let me tell you who I was: one of the 1st people to have a cellular phone. It was a bag phone that had to hook up with wires all through my car. There was an antenna for it out of my back window. It was Cellular One and it was 1 dollar per minute. So, I am not stranger to the beginnings of what is now a people chasing, self illusion of a stagnant life. If that does not apply to you and you use it as a cell phone and only surf and do things where you put it in your hand, where you are seated and stationary.

For the rest of you, Shame, Shame. I do not say that lightly. I say you are using the item to cut down your actual communication and would much rather deal with an item than a person. How can you live with yourselves?

Let’s take an example. My own lil Sis who I love. When it is time for bed, she texts her son to give her a kiss goodnight. They are in the same home. That is a light example.

Let’s look at a family of 4. All 4 are at the dinner table and all are looking at their hands. Maybe, once in a while, eyes may happen to meet, but that is a rare thing for these 4. In reality, this family is estranged to say the least. All 4 are playing the same game.

Now, let’s put a happy example in. I am here now typing to you looking at a 42 inch flat screen TV. Granted, it is that big so I do not have to use my glasses, geezer that I am. But my full attention is on what I am doing. I am not walking around writing to you and negotiating a deal, walking across the street. Granted, I do have a photographic memory and if I do more than 1 thing at a time, something is going to suffer. But what I saw and experienced inside of a shopping Mall at the height of Christmas Season was almost crazy. Almost every person had their hand out and the other fingers were typing away. They could bang into each other and not even know.

And the texting instead of talking. I have texted 1 time in my life to prove I am not stupid. Eric was on 1 side of the table and I was on the other side and texted him “Hi” years ago. But, would I ever use texting in anything in my life? Never. Why: too impersonal for me. I will email and it will be special like these writings. But I will not substitute actual talking with a machine when talking is needed. And to finish. If you think talking is done and this is the way the World is going: God help us all.
