Practise what you preach
A few rules to better fit my professional career and my family life.
This is my last week at Akamon, one of the Top 25 companies in the Social Gambling industry where I put 110% of my energy for the past five years. I was there even before the company was founded and I’ve seen it become a leader in its product and targeted regions.
I commited myself to this project since the moment Carlos Blanco and Jaume Ferré shared with me their vision and I blindly believed in it, and also, make no mistake, because the compensation package was really juicy. On the other hand, the personal costs were extraordinary. Akamon HQ are almost a hundred miles far from my place in the small town of Riudaura (La Garrotxa, Catalonia) and I must confess that I have slept for the past 2.000 days with my suitcase next to my bed and have driven for countless kilometers.
In the past couple of months I decided it was about time to change something in my life and that was the right timing to practise what I always preach. Wether it is in informal chatting, lectures with teenagers at high school or while talking about life in general with my daughters I have always backed the theory that professional careers as they were explained to us by our parents were vanishing and new setups would appear thanks to the technological revolution we are lucky enough to live.
In my last days at Akamon some people are asking me “And now? What will you do?” and my answer is crystal clear: “I don’t know what I’m gonna do, but I know which are the rules that I will observe in order to organize my life”.
So these are the rules I put to myself for my next steps:
- I want to sleep always at home
- Not focus in one single project
- Split my time into 2 to 4 different projects being at least one of them an entrepreneurship project with my pals at Volcanic Internet.
- Invest a couple of hours per week to learn something new (Ich möchte Deutsch lernen)
- Work with people I enjoy spending time with them.
- Before taking any final decision I made a list with 20 different people that I want to meet/have lunch/have dinner/spend a dia at the office/take a walk so I can listen and learn and thus my plan’s success odds will dramatically increase.
As you will see there is no “economic rule”. Basically because I’m totally confident that money follows good work and I’m sure that money will come if I can properly execute my plan.
I also want to spend some time writing as I did in the past with my blog (it is in catalan) and after several months as an avid Medium reader I think that this is the right platform to publish my stories.
The goals are clear. I want the gears of my professional career and my family life to work together, smoothly, pushing each other at the right moment as in a swiss watch.
It is about time to leave a comfort zone to create a new one.
The challenge is daring and attractive and I will try to share it here as it is becomes a reality.
First step is in the books, now is time to practise what I preach.
