Day 5: Route 66

Today’s drive was straight out of the Pixar movie Cars. We drove down I-40, which is essentially the “Mother Road,” Route 66. We saw ghost towns. We saw vintage cars. We saw tourist traps. We saw scenic landscapes.

Day 5’s Route

Our first gas stop took us through the small town of McLean, TX, which might as well be the full up model for Radiator Springs from Cars. It had one blinking light in the center of town (blinking yellow) and several businesses that could’ve been the inspiration for Radiator Springs. It had this gem of an ancient gas station:

Phillips 66 Station in McLean, TX
We saw lots of Phillips 66 stations still in service.

Texas is flat. I mean, really flat. I have nothing more to say about this.

New Mexico is one of my favorite places to visit. Beautiful views, friendly people, and great, great, great food. We arrived outside of Albuquerque and set up at a quaint RV park that has a very Route 66 feel, with old, restored Streamliners and old cars.

I got us food at a fantastic hole-in-the-wall Mexican eatery a few minutes from the campsite. The food was good and just spicy enough to be interesting.

And then, off in the distance, to top of the evening, a thunderstorm. The cloud-to-ground strikes were phenomenal.

Tomorrow: Arizona.
