Interesting read, only input I’d have is that each game community tends to have a unique feel to it. I’ve seen purely competitive games that are super friendly, and I’ve seen purely single player games that have a social aspect to it get incredibly aggressively stat competitive. I think it has more to do with the type of players the game happens to get popular with first than the actual game. If the asshole players tend to pick up the game first, they recruit all their asshole friends to the game and the game becomes more of an asshole culture, regardless of what the developers have done. And short of getting strict on moderation there isn't much anyone can do.
