The problem with this article is that by using the claim that “The United States is not a ‘democracy,’ it is ‘a Republic’” that it refutes as it’s provocative title locates it in an online search with the multitude of listings that earnestly and uncompromisingly claim that America actually isn’t a democracy. The meaning, message or influence of any article is, in part, it’s title. For many who do not read an article, but only its title, this article joins the long list of misinformed and misleading search listings in support of what it actually disputes. There seems to be an irritating trend among editors to do this (and sometimes provocative articles) presumably because it draws the ire and thereby draws the attention of a publication’s target audience. (The Alantic is perhaps the worst offender.)
The significance of ther stupid idea that America is not a democracy didn’t matter when crack-pot right-wingers were just showing off what they think is their incredible insight to each other. Now they are using their reckless ignorance to defend the train wreck that is the Electoral College and other shortcomings of American democracy like discriminatory electoral law, unequal representation and the further efforts of the Republican Party to roll back democracy to ensure continuing conservative domination.
