The deal is that all employers make a profit by devaluing the labour of their employees. No employee, no product. Income differentials may be justified, but they never justify degrading people to the point of hunger, exhaustion, ill-health, risk of homelessness, and so on.

If you make a product or supply a service, but aren’t giving it away, you probably have an expectation of making a fair return. But somebody will come along and say that you have no basis for expecting a return, because we can take everything you make without paying.

So don’t try the ‘life isn’t fair’ trope unless you are ready to walk the plank yourself.
