Tip #1 — Inversions

Inversions of your chords will help you voice lead your chord progressions and keep your chords in the same area of the neck. Playing chord progressions all over the neck can sometimes sound a bit disjointed and rough around the edges.

Voice leading with a mixture of chord inversions can make your chord progressions sound more original too, seeing as you’re not playing the same old voicings that people are used to hearing!

Learning the CAGED System would be a good start if you’re not sure on how to do this.

When you have the CAGED system down, I would suggest learning root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion variations of your major, minor, augmented and diminished triads!

Tip #2 — Open voicings
