You mention those who get tested once a year, but unless you specifically request it, herpes is not included in the bank of tests (CDC’s guidance) Further, about 80% of the population has hsv type 1, which we think of as cold sores. Problem is that it can be transmitted to someone’s genitals (more common for women to catch it this way) via oral sex. So there is always some risk involved, and those who think they are “clean” probably can pass on one form of herpes or the other through unprotected intercourse or oral sex. So nobody should be smug, as there are really, really few of is that ain’t carrying. Just saying.
