Respectfully I disagree with your article’s premise and conclusion. The claps system offers immediate feedback that can be traced back to individual readers (how many readers? how much did each reader like the article?) whereas the new system provides only cumulative data,and reflects reading speed more than anything else.

I am not privy to the algorithm used but if someone were to try to game the system by writing the same word 100000 times and all of the readers agreed to leave the page open for a period of time…say overnight, then wouldn’t that method generate the largest amount of cash flow but provide absolutely zero value to reader and writer?

If the claps system is ineffective then it should be tweaked to restrict the number of claps (different max) or frequency of use (daily) not discarded in favour of an opaque and vague accounting system.
