OKLAHOMA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY PRATER MUST RESIGN

Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater has overreached his position and must resign.

Over the course of the last several weeks, Oklahomans across the state have joined the Movement for Black Lives to demand justice, liberation, accountability, and transparency from our elected officials and law enforcement as the nation stands against police brutality and violence. Instead of protecting fellow Oklahomans from tear gas and rubber bullets or addressing the harm and violence police commit against our communities with impunity, Prater chose to charge those demonstrating their First Amendment Constitutional rights with terrorism. These charges carry a $1million bond, meaning innocent Oklahomans are left to suffer in Oklahoma County Jail, which is routinely ranked as one of the worst jails in the nation. Prater even arrested a child on their 18th birthday — and is awaiting the 18th birthday of additional demonstrators to throw into jail. In Oklahoma, where private prisons are an unfortunate pillar of our economy, it is evident Prater saw this as an opportunity to not only silence the voices of the people, but to also ensure the state profits off these unconstitutional arrests and jail sentences. People are people, not disposable, not profit.

The excessive charges in question stem from the weekend of May 30th, when Oklahomans across the state joined in the nationwide demonstrations seeking justice for George Floyd, an innocent black man who was murdered by officers from the Minneapolis Police Department. Similarly to Minnesota and elsewhere throughout the nation, law enforcement acted as the aggressors. Alleged actions of demonstrators included blockading an intersection, during which demonstrators were immediately attacked and brutalized by the Oklahoma City Police Department before being arrested and jailed. Many arrestees were originally jailed on lesser charges, but in the past two weeks Prater has elevated them. Prater also stands willing to include charges of terrorism for those still in legal limbo and to bring forth additional charges against identified participants in the OKC anti-police brutality demonstrations. This is unacceptable.
