Lesson #8 from 30 Leadership Lessons

David Sallee

People know who is in charge. Don’t beat them up with reminders. I once sat in a room with a leader and his team while he reminded them over and over that he was in charge, he decided who got plum assignments and who did not, and that they had nothing to say about it. He won; he defeated his team that day…and for the rest of his tenure. Leaders are often more subtle than this in reminding everyone who is in charge, but still the message of “I am in charge and you are not” is very clear. Check your behavior to see if you are sending such messages unintentionally.
