Bernie Believers move forward, not backwards.

I have been feeling pretty conflicted since Hillary was declared the victor after the last of the primaries. On one side, I want to vote for someone more liberal, someone that isn’t for these ridiculous trade deals, someone that isn’t supported by big banks and corporations, and someone that doesn’t support bringing more war and conflict to the Middle East. On the other side I do feel an extreme fear for a Trump presidency, for all the hatred in this country, for the xenophobia that has been stirred up by his campaign. And I am especially afraid of all the misinformation and lies spewed by his adoring fans.

I also have been thinking about this famous Martin Niemöller quote a lot lately:

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Donald Trump has already alienated Muslims, Mexicans, African Americans… The Republican party has done everything they can to alienate women and gay people. The Republican party is, frankly, running out of groups to terrorize with their rhetoric.

My family and many others are immigrants that escaped tyrants like Trump. We have so many examples in history of people spewing the same language. We have had dictators in THIS CENTURY that behave like Trump. We have warfare in this century. We have institutionalized racism and homophobia in this century. None of those things are likely to go away any time soon, but they all could get so much worse.

And even with all of those bad things that exist in America, think about all the privilege in your lives. In all our lives. Most of us have homes. Most of us have cars. Most of us have food and clean water. Some of us even have cute pets. We live in a paradise right now compared to a majority of the world. All of that can change this upcoming November 8th.

I want people to vote. If people want to vote Green party or Libertarian I can’t stop you. I don’t like the idea of voting out of fear either. But I can’t believe that people would willingly allow someone like Donald Trump to take power in our country. I just can’t believe it.

So please, please, think really hard about any decision you are about to make. And if you don’t agree with Hillary, continue to work hard, continue to protest, continue to make your voices heard. Make Hillary’s life hell for the next 4–8 years. Don’t let her get away with bad policies that hurt your families. Continue the revolution started by Bernie. Call your local representatives, run for office, work on a campaign in your spare time. Don’t allow all that we have accomplished in the last year to die with the presidential election.

Lastly, I implore everyone to talk to your friends and family that want to vote for Trump. And not over Email, Facebook or Twitter — do it in person, or on the phone at least. Try to listen to them. Try to empathize with what they are feeling. Try to be reasonable, even if they are not. Try to tell them your concerns for the future. I for one am very concerned about our future right now.

So I saw this clip this morning with Seth Meyers and it made me think about all that could happen and think about everyone that is so frustrated right now that Hillary is the Democratic nominee. And in the clip Seth makes a great point: “This country is about 48% crazy uncles, and it is about to be Thanksgiving all day every day.”
