This is what Apple should tell you when you lose your iPhone

And the FBI & State Department are doing what about this?

You went well beyond the norm and protected your own identity. But, of course, you stopped short of chasing the bad guys.

It seems to me that cyber-based identity theft crosses the line from individual responsibility to collective responsibility. Identity is a foundation component of society. If we lose confidence in the security of our identity then society begins to break down.

Protecting our identity should not be left to the individual or to the cottage industry that has emerged around it. Protecting identity should be a national concern. The FBI should chase down every lead and the State Department should coordinate international efforts. If we are lucky, the NSA is reading this and will notify them to take a closer look. ;-)
