3 UX skills

Good priorities Ben. I’d like to suggest some more…

  1. Spend your “exposure hours” in front of users, listening, observing, adapting. Empathy has to be nurtured, developed and honed.
  2. Ship it. Deadlines matter, business quickly tires of fantasy uxers that don’t deliver. A good solution on time beats a perfect one too late.
  3. Facilitate design and don’t be precious. Listen to the team, compromise, adapt. A flashy solution is rubbish if response times plummet.
  4. Design to meet principles & objectives. Eg conversion. It’s entirely possible to create a pretty UI that will slowly bankrupt the company.
  5. Tell the story. Be able to articulate the design problem, solution, reasoning and journey to stakeholders. The UX skillset includes negotiation, diplomacy, storytelling and a whole lot more.
  6. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Test against appropriate metrics, define success targets pre-test and measure honestly against them.

I wonder how much students are taught that the skills to “master UX” go beyond moving things around a screen? Beer chat.
