3 UX skills

Good priorities Ben. I’d like to suggest some more…
- Spend your “exposure hours” in front of users, listening, observing, adapting. Empathy has to be nurtured, developed and honed.
- Ship it. Deadlines matter, business quickly tires of fantasy uxers that don’t deliver. A good solution on time beats a perfect one too late.
- Facilitate design and don’t be precious. Listen to the team, compromise, adapt. A flashy solution is rubbish if response times plummet.
- Design to meet principles & objectives. Eg conversion. It’s entirely possible to create a pretty UI that will slowly bankrupt the company.
- Tell the story. Be able to articulate the design problem, solution, reasoning and journey to stakeholders. The UX skillset includes negotiation, diplomacy, storytelling and a whole lot more.
- You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Test against appropriate metrics, define success targets pre-test and measure honestly against them.
I wonder how much students are taught that the skills to “master UX” go beyond moving things around a screen? Beer chat.
