Sixth generation Lafitte native Captain Randy talks while a ‘gator watches on.

On the Bayou

There’s no baiting or feeding alligators from Captain Randy’s airboat.

He shuns the touristy, gimmicky Louisiana swamp tour and just tells me about his life.

“Everyone is different. I don’t know what kind of tours other people give,” the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tours guide says.

“Me, this is how I grew up. You know what I’m saying?

“If I wasn’t doing this, I would be out here on the Bayou anyway. It don’t matter. I would be out here no matter what.

“I can’t eat at restaurants. They don’t have the taste. We catch our food, we put it in a pot. If you came to eat fish at my house, you never gon’ eat at a restaurant again.”

Randy’s hunted these lands for four decades. He knows where to find baby ‘gators and he will suddenly hand one over to unsuspecting passengers, creating some hilarious photos in the process.
