Reflections on Japan: Power User Nation

The Japanese are obsessed with detail. Look at their magazines, which use tiny type to fit in all conceivable information about the products and places shown. Look at their ads, their travel brochures, their packaging. It’s all created to answer any question a potential consumer could possibly have.

Japanese businessmen who go overseas write detailed reports upon their return. I once sat through a presentation that included such fascinating tid-bits as how many meals were served in the cafeteria of the visited company. Why include this trivia? There’s always a possibility that SOMEONE might want to know.

When you’re surrounded by this level of detail for its own sake, you become skilled at wading through it to find what you really want. But it remains nice to know that if, for some reason, you want to see your karaoke skill level represented in a spider graph, it’s right there at your fingertips.
