This is all a bit preachy, isn’t it?
Lifelong Democrat here. I live in Massachusetts. I believe the national debt is a horrifying problem which threatens our country and might someday cause the entire economy to collapse. Some politicians talk a good game, but year in and year out, they continue to adopt budgets with more debt built in to them. And of course, the existing debt accrues a billion dollars a day in INTEREST ALONE.
I made up my mind a long time ago that I won’t support any candidate who engages in deficit spending. I will find a candidate who is against it and write that candidate in.
I am sure my vote won’t have any effect. However, that’s no reason not to do it. What if every single voter just did what s/he felt was right, instead of saying, “No one else is going to do this, so it’s a waste of time!” What if every voter stopped worrying about what everyone else was doing? Elections would look quite different. So I’m going to do my part.
And another thing: Don’t be so quick to dismiss objections based on conscience. I feel good about my protest votes, because I know I did my part, however small, to reject the status quo. My conscience is clear. It wouldn’t be if I caved in and voted for someone I disagreed with on a fundamental issue.
