I admire your courage in bringing this conversation to the table! I am not only a White Jew, but I also have blue eyes and blonde hair. And I grew up wondering why people thought they were complimenting me when they said, “You don’t look Jewish”. Even at age 63, I’ve been asked, “When did you convert to Judaism?” I know exactly what you mean by “white privilege”. And I was speechless the first time someone made an anti-Semitic comment in front of me (not realizing I was Jewish). Over the years, my appearance has given me several opportunities to speak up and call people out on their anti-Semitism. And with that courage, skill set, and “White Privilege”, I am better prepared to be an ally to marginalized people of color. Racists don’t always listen to me, but I’m not worried about them physically attacking me. And because they don’t realize that I’m Jewish, their verbal retaliation never has amounted to anything more than “dumb Libtard”. In these troubled times of blatant racism, I use my White Privilege to call people out whenever I hear racist words.
