Indeed. Unfortunately we have shown ourselves able to adapt to, and absorb into our cultural norm, tendencies that are innately destructive of our well being. As I read it, Holly was referring to the our ability to absorb a delusion which defines as ‘a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact’ and that, to me, has only a possible short term use, akin to superstition, it does not seem to me it offers a long-term benefit.
