Content creators and celebrities wield immense influence to their followers, especially over impressionable young audiences. When famous gymnast, Livvy Dunne, engages in the toxic cycle of editing her body for an Instagram post, it raises important questions about the message it sends to her followers.

These young girls that idolize Livvy begin to believe this idea that a flawless appearance is necessary for success like hers. This harmful belief that they are inadequate if they don’t measure up to a digital enhanced image, creates a cycle online of feeling like you have to alter your appearance as well.

It is disappointing to see that the people and the media have had such a strong impact on Livvy that she feels the need to photoshop her photos in order to fit this impossible standard that our society has set for young girls and women. As if being one of the top collegiate gymnasts in the country, being a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and having multiple other brand partnerships isn’t enough, the media has set such high and unrealistic expectations, that even Livvy Dunne has fallen into the trap of editing her photos.

Not only is this sad and disappointing that Livvy feels she needs to do this, but for the hundreds of thousands of young girls that follow her and now see this unrealistic beauty standard that they want to achieve.

No matter who you are, no matter how great of shape you are in, or how successful you are, this problem can affect everyone and anyone.

This dangerous cycle of photoshopping can harm her audience, but can also create a sense of distrust from her followers and her audience. We have seen Tik Tok’s already of people calling her out for other photos that they are speculating are photoshopped too, on top of nasty comments on her various social media platforms.
