I Listened to a Trump Supporter
David A Hill Jr

This is by far the best piece I’ve read regarding this election, to be honest. Both my parents, most of my family, and many of my friends are all Trump supporters, and it hurts me to no end to see the vitriolic way people talk about Republicans. People I love, people I respect, and people I don’t know all act as if they’re the scum of the earth for voting for Trump. As if my parents don’t have a brain (they started an extremely successful business almost 30 years ago now as well and have been hurt by recent policies; they’re looking for change). People on the other side don’t bother to understand it. They don’t bother to think about who they could be hurting when posting on Facebook about how all Trump supporters are “idiots.” This happens on both sides, but I’m more affected by those who hate Trump simply because of my own personal ties with it all.

I just wish the discourse involved more understanding like you demonstrated in this piece. If it did, I think we could meet in the middle and develop policies that truly help people. The harsh nature and trajectory of our two political parties make me scared for future elections.
