This point…. “by saying ‘Black Lives Matter’ does not mean that all other lives don’t matter” is SO important. I wish more people realized this. I just felt the need to add my own experience to the mix — women are shamed for fighting for women’s rights, daily. That is actually one of the biggest challenges I’ve encountered when discussing womens’ rights in the west — men who always turn to the conversation to “why aren’t we discussing men’s rights? Aren’t they important too?! Women have all the rights they could possibly need here in the west!” The conversation about gender is much the same, in my experience, as race (though as one of the whitest girls you’ll ever meet, there’s pretty much a guarantee my view is distorted on at least one level). When talking about both gender and race though, people are unwilling to see past their own privilege. They’re unwilling to acknowledge the unique, systematic and very real circumstances entire groups of people live under daily. That unwillingness is what has perpetuated it for so long and it has created #AllLivesMatter and #NotAllMen in response to very real issues. I think more people need to realize that these discussions aren’t just theoretical — like you said, they’re peoples’ lives.
