John Wooden’s 7 point creed

I recently came across and began studying up on the life of legendary basketball coach John Wooden.

One of the things I discovered about him was that he carried with him, scribbled on a piece of paper in his wallet, a 7 point creed that he lived his life by:

  1. Be true to yourself.
  2. Make each day your masterpiece.
  3. Help others.
  4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible.
  5. Make friendship a fine art.
  6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  7. Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings everyday.

By looking at this list we can tell that Wooden was highly intentional about the areas in life that truly mattered to him. Areas like self awareness, living life to the fullest, giving to others, continuous personal development, relationships, security, and gratitude.

Have you determined what areas in life are most important to you, the areas you value most?

Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely what others think you are. ~John Wooden
