The ancient answer is still the right answer, and it is the answer that has sustained people through harsh/killing times again and again. “Victory Gardens”, or “allotments” or “dachas”. People need to grow vegetables that grow where they live, fruits, too, that sustain them. It is in our genes, deep in our genes. We need to discover it. Everybody, rich and poor needs to do this. Anybody who has not done it will be shocked at how much work it is. the first couple of years. After that, the soil will be more alive with organic matter. You really should have a soil analysis at the start. Here is my system for central Texas, climate zone 8A.
