Day 100

15. INT. DAY. CAFÉ

I turn off the music in my phones and start listening to the conversation between a Brazilian couple, right in front of me. They’re around their late 50s, staring at each other while drinking coffee. Their conversation follows:

LADY

How did you like it?

MAN

Uh, I’m tired. It’s a lot of walking, isn’t it?

LADY

Yeah, but it’s a beautiful city, huh?

MAN

Oh yeah…it’s amazing how everything works here.

LADY

mmm…

MAN

The Metro goes everywhere, it’s safe, everyone’s polite…it’s another planet!

LADY

Yeah…

They stare at each other. They stare around. They see the people coming in. After a long pause, and the arrival of a few Muslim ladies, the Lady says something.

LADY

Look. More Muslims. They are so many here.

MAN

They are a lot.

LADY

They are so weird.

They remain silent for a few more seconds.

LADY

How can they understand each other, with that thing on their faces?

MAN

What do you mean?

LADY

They can talk through that? Can you understand them?

MAN

I don’t know. I think so.

LADY

It’s so shameful. Look, it’s like they’re not even together.

MAN

Don’t stare at them.

LADY

(a little agitated)

I’m not. Don’t worry.

They remain in silence for a second time. They look around, drink their coffees. They analyze everything. They’re finishing their coffees. The lady says:

LADY

Where do you want to go tonight?

MAN

I’m pretty tired. I was thinking about eating at our room and then going to bed. We’re going to wake up early once again anyway, let’s rest a bit.

LADY

I can’t wait to rest when we get home.

MAN

You’re not working Thursday, when we arrive?

LADY

Yeah, but it’s just 2 days. Then, I can rest for the whole weekend. I’m not doing anything that weekend, I can’t wait!

MAN

Hum.

They remain silent for a little longer. After that, the man gets up. He says:

MAN

Let’s go, ok? If we get back now, I’m gonna try to watch the Corinthians match.

LADY

Ok. Shall I leave this on the table?

MAN

No, throw it away, we’re not home.

They get up and leave.

Day 100, Charlie. I’m a Corinthians fan myself, by the way.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
