“How do you design for clinical empathy?”
How Top Designers Connect with Patients

Something missing from this article is how you design systems that allow clinicians the time and emotional energy to engage and empathize with patients. The best health technologies are the ones that improve care while also freeing health providers from the shackles of computer entry and other tasks that distract from time with patients. A simple innovation is to include a patient photo with the patient’s record — helps prevent wrong patient order entry and gives the clinician a visual image of their patient before they actually go to the room to see them. Medical scribes are another innovation that gives clinicians time to think less about documentation and more about empathy. They (the provider) may even remember how powerful touch is as a gateway to clinical empathy — something as simple as a hand on a patient’s shoulder can connect and bridge gaps of communication and understanding.
