μHorror: An Introduction

Welcome to μHorror (pronounced “micro-horror” for all my non-metric prefix-literate friends), a series of short horror film reviews from your new favorite mad scientist and picky horror fan. My goal with this series is to help you to better μmanage your time by reviewing if a movie is worth the investment in 500 words or less, and not spoiling things along the way (but I consider trailers to be fair game).

Before you give this series a stab, there are some things you should know about me and how I relate to the horror genre. I have not always been a horror fan. As a pre-teen, “The Ring” extinguished most of my interest in horror by sufficiently scaring the crap out of me and making me wary of CRT TVs for eternity. In recent years, however, I’ve rediscovered the exhilaration that comes with being scared. I am a strongly visual person, and the camera is a fantastic tool to make me uncomfortable, anxious, and physically squirmy. As a microbiologist, I thrive in the disgusting reality all around us, which horror can often highlight so well. Finally, I have always had an inclination toward nihilism and find myself a little eager (too eager perhaps…?) to sympathize with the evil and villainous side of horror.

Not all of the films will be strictly “horror” in its traditional sense, but if I’m reviewing it here, I watched it because I wanted to be scared. I seek out horror movies that are truly interesting on multiple levels; jump scares are fun but that can’t be the only tool employed by the filmmaker to get a high mark from me. In other words, I want a movie that is a good movie (you know, has a story and characters and setting) in addition to being scary. So, hopefully you enjoy at least some of the movies I μrecommend here, as I try to find the best horror movies the genre has to offer.
