Wacoinda vs. Marvel

I argue with my dad all the time about diminishing opportunities for working people in the land of great exceptionalism. I understand his point of view. He’s a beneficiary of the New Deal, and the pathways it provided for the son of a sharecropper who was willing to work hard and take advantage of educational opportunities to elevate himself to the floor of Congress. While I on the other hand have watched as the specter of inequality grows in the fertile soil of the spiraling price of higher education and the indebtedness that comes with it, stagnant wages for working people since the early 80’s, and people with health insurance having to declare bankruptcy because of what insurance doesn’t cover.

This was all very disturbing to me. I knew enough to know that what worked in the past wasn’t going to work moving forward. The solution existed in a new idea, or something so old and forgotten, it is new again.

To quote Matthew Stewart’s article “The New American Aristocracy” in the Atlantic:

The defining challenge of our time is to renew the promise of American democracy by reversing the calcifying effects of accelerating inequality. As long as inequality rules, reason will be absent from our politics; without reason, none of our other issues can be solved. It’s a world-historical problem. But the solutions that have been put forward so far are, for the most part, shoebox in size.

Then last year, I had a few coins and decided to learn more about crypto currency. One thing led to another and I found myself in the Black Coin Group soon to be Wacoinda. I was truly inspired by the leadership of Lamar Wilson and Lafe Taylor. They put their proverbial nuts on the table and created a decentralized organization mirroring decentralized currency. Decentralization is a great equalizer. It requires members to be individually responsible and be in contribution to the greater good. I got really curious really fast. And what was most impressive of all was the way they created Love as a founding principle. Yes, that’s right, I said Love. I know that sounds strange…Like what place does love have in an endeavor that uses technology to eradicate economic oppression everywhere???

As far as I’m concerned, EVERYTHING. Love is patient, kind and compassionate. These are required principles for people to come together and work together to elevate everyone. If nothing else, it’s better than the fake merit based, make-as-much-money-as-you-can-at-the-expense-of-everyone-else system we currently have.

And here comes Marvel Comics, mulling whether to accuse Wacoinda of copyright infringement. They don’t know who we are. We are so much bigger than a name….so much better than a fictional country in Africa. We are a community of real life people building a new thing based on love and cooperative economics. As Margaret Mead said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

And that’s exactly what we are doing.
