Gun Control — Topic Proposal Final Draft
For my topic proposal, I would like to write about gun control. Throughout the years, gun control has been a very strong topic and is constantly on the news. This topic is relevant because there has always been incidents of murders and shootings that could have been avoided if there was a strict policy on gun control. In a recent article that I have read, Golden State Warriors head coach, Steve Kerr, mentioned his thoughts on gun control, and I was very interested as to what he said. He mentioned that, “Our government is insane. We are insane. And what bugs me is this adherence to the right to bear arms, you know. That was back in 1776. People did not own automatic rifles,” meaning that he supports gun control and that the Constitution should amend the right to bear arms. When I read his quote, I was very interested in it because even though he may seem to be too busy caring for his team and is an important figure in sports, he is still a human that has feelings for society, and thinks about what happens in our world. Furthermore, there have been even more relevant shootings in Orlando which resulted in more thoughts about gun control. Recently, the US Senate rejected tighter gun control and I feel that this is an important topic to write about because I can write about why it was rejected and what the thoughts were within these people. Overall, I feel this topic is relevant because the thought of having gun control is always on our minds and on the news. Sometimes the thought dies down for a while because of no shootings on the news, but then once an incident happens again, the thought sparks once more. If these guns were taken away, wouldn’t these people whose lives that were taken away still be alive? I can always find relevant and recent news regarding gun control, I just recently read an article about LGBT cause in gun control.
This topic is controversial because there are many people who support gun control and people who are against it. For example, the other day I asked my friends what they thought about gun control and some said that guns should be controlled and taken away or made much harder to acquire. Others said that guns are good for protection and that one should have one just in case. On the news, families of murder victims are strongly supporting gun control because they absolutely do not want someone else’s loved one to get shot and killed one day. I understand that these people want the guns to be taken away because they do not want any more devastating events. Gun control can help foster a peaceful world by eliminating an easy weapon that can potentially kill someone with one pull of the trigger finger in seconds. While many support gun control, there are definitely people who are against it because of the amendment with the right to bear arms. For example, there are many people who support guns because it is our rights to have them. But in all honesty, I feel that this amendment needs to be updated because it was made in 1776. Back in the day, people needed guns to protect themselves because they could have been overtaken by the British, or even Natives. On the other hand, people would think of keeping their guns in case of a catastrophic event happening in which the citizens of the country had to defend themselves. If the guns were taken away, we would be defenseless against a mass military attack.
This topic is very interesting because when I go outside in public, I feel nervous sometimes when I go inside a theatre. What if there was someone in the theatre who snuck in an automatic rifle and then started shooting people in there while watching the movie? But then I think about how some burglar would break into my aunt’s house and then she would use her gun to defend herself. Then there are the news articles of shootings around the world, and how gun control could have prevented the deaths from happening. There are so many responses to these events that even Steve Kerr made his response to them. Guns can be used to protect yourself when the time is appropriate, but there are definitely people out there who abuse their “right” and kill people or even themselves. I feel that I will be able to gather a lot of information because there will always be people fighting against and supporting gun control. I feel that each side has a say regarding gun control and the two may never come to an agreement. I am very interested to read about the various thoughts regarding gun control because its effects can apply to my life as well. Right now, I do not know much about gun control and the information that each side has, but I am eager to learn more and be knowledgeable about this topic. In addition, even though the US Senate recently did not pass a gun control bill, what if something happens such as a mass shooting again in the near future? Will gun control pass now then? How many more deaths will it take until a change happens? What if stricter gun control bids never pass because we will always have to keep guns for protection? I feel that this topic has a lot to talk about and I am eager to learn more.
