Discover the secrets of the biggest flower festival in Europe: Keukenhof
The Dutch sure know how to plant 7 million Tulips
Ever wondered what the biggest flower festival in Europe looks like? Let’s take a walk together through The Netherlands’s most beautiful garden.
This weekend we visited Keukenhof in the city of Lisse, in the Netherlands.
History
‘Keukenhof’ translated in English, becomes ‘kitchen garden’, which makes little sense, even to me as a native Dutch speaker.
To understand the name, we have to dig into the history of this massive 79 acres of forest. Originally this was the forest of a 15th-century castle, named Slot Teylingen.
The forest itself was used to hunt for game, plant and harvest vegetables, and forage fruits. That is where the name ‘Keukenhof’ came from. Basically, the castle used the forest as its outdoor kitchen.
The park itself
It is BIG. There is no other way of describing it. We spent 4.5 hours walking and we did not manage to see everything.
