This is kind of inaccurate, tbh. There are nearly a dozen federated communication platforms that don’t rely on such a mechanism. Not all decentralized forms of communication require a blockchain with monetization schemes.

Thanks for asking! Matrix is more of a real-time protocol with a use-case that can essentially be described as group chat. While Matrix itself is capable of federation, and the protocol could be used for traditional social networking functions, it might not necessarily make sense to use the protocol for those purposes.
