We have done something similar in the past with the Townske app. You might want to avoid the race condition though, as I’ve seen times when it’s read the full image out of cache first and then fades the thumbnail on top.

Try tracking the full image loading state and not fading in the thumbnail in cases where the full image has already been loaded.
